A winter visit

A Winter visit is a personal poem to Abse because it is a memory f him walking through a park with his elderly mother during the winter. He notices a Peacock which he believes to be a symbol of new life, however his mother reveals to him that she is dying and does not have long. He wants to weep but he does not because he wants to remain strong for her.Abse ( a professional doctor) remains unemotional despite the horrendous news because he has got himself used to death working as a doctor and he chooses to use his skills of not showing any major emotion here for the better.

Throughout the poem the rhyme scheme remains a solid A/B/A sequence. This could be symbolic of his mothers failing heart which is going at a slow steady beat nearing death. One of Larkin's poems that is very similar is Home is so sad, this poem is about his mothers house after she has died the plac becomes empty and lifeless.
